Judge delays trial because of loud music
March 17, 2010 18:44 EDT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- St. Patrick may or may not have driven the snakes out of Ireland, but loud music from St. Patrick's Day festivities definitely drove a murder trial out of a Polk County courtroom -- at least temporarily.

The music Wednesday was coming from an outdoor celebration about three blocks from the courthouse, but Judge Joel Novak said it was loud enough to be a distraction in his courtroom. The afternoon mix included popular numbers by Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas.

After jokingly asking if anyone had any song requests, Novak sent the jurors home for the day.

The jurors were hearing opening statements in the first-degree murder trial of 19-year-old Travaris Chancellor of Chicago, who is accused of running down two women with a car in Des Moines last July 4.
