It looks like tuition will go up at iowa universities, as they try and stay afloat during the budget crisis of 2010.
The schools are trying to figure out how to cut nearly $60 million from their combined budgets, after the governor ordered a ten percent across-the-board cut.
Thursday the regents approved a $100 spring tuition surcharge for each student.
It should raise six million dollars for the universities.
The school presidents have also volunteered to give up their bonuses this year.
That would save an estimated $155,000.
Meantime, teaching assistants say are already feeling the pinch.
150 have already been cut at the University of Iowa.
TA's grades papers, meets with students, and lead small discussion groups that follow a lecture.
In most cases, students spend more one-on-one time learning with them than with their professors.
But the union that represents Iowa grad assistants says they're often a target for budgt cuts.
And they say that will hurt students.
