Washed away but not for good. The Czech Village is making a come back after the floods of 08 destroyed the main street charm. Today they are celebrating how far they've come, knowing there's still a long way to go.

Plenty of food, plenty of fun and plenty to celebrate.

This is just fabulous, huge for the economy down here, we're back, we're bigger, better, cleaner, says Bridget Casey, the owner of the Bohemian Cafe.

A lot of life in these streets now but it's taken awhile to get there.
It's been a long, hard year for the businesses but they're coming back.

We took something negative and made it positive into one of the most positive experiences of my life, says Casey.

At the Bohemian Cafe they're constantly reminded of how far they've come, all they have to do is look; the only thing left of the old building is the chandelier.

Community members want this to be what it once was, something the community could be proud of, something they could enjoy.

And it's getting there, about 85 percent of the businesses are back open.
The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library is going to rebuild in the village but that it won't open up until 2012.

Mental health cases tax police, emergency workers
November 21, 2009 12:31 EST

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- Police and emergency responders around the nation have long struggled to deal with people who have mental illness. Now some say the situation is getting worse.

A poor economy and cuts to institutional programs threaten to overwhelm personnel trained to deal with crime and vehicle accidents, not mental crises.

In Burlington, Vt., the police department recently hired a mental health specialist to handle some of these calls, in hopes of reducing the number of people with mental illness who are shuttled needlessly into the justice system.

Around the country, as many as 1,300 departments have set up crisis intervention teams, who get specialized mental health training and work with the community on the responses.
