A whole town forced to evacuate in the middle of the night.
Now the sheriff's department is looking for the cause of an anhydrous ammonia leak from the River Valley Co-op in Olin.
Around nine o'clock everyone was asked to go nearby to a shelter set up at the Morley community center. Then around 3:30 in the morning, fire crews cleared the air and folks were able to come back. This morning CBS 2's Brittney Hibbs hears what the town and the River-Valley Co-op says might have happened.
Here in Olin as folks wake up this morning the weather was not the only thing that seemed hazy.
An Anhydrous Ammonia leak that required the whole town evacuate in the middle of the night leaves many unanswered questions.
Mike Wagner, with the River Valley Co-op says the leak is Yes, very unlikely, rare.
Unlikely, that high levels of Anhydrous ammonia locked in a tank would be able to leak out. Leaving residents in town to suspect the worst.
I'm not real sure, it was someone tried to steal some Anhydrous. Broke the lock and it was locked. Broke the valve open, says Jim Hartwig.
Others were just happy they got out unharmed.
"What went through your mind?"
To get the kids out of the house, says Joe Newell.
There is still no word yet on what caused the anhydrous ammonia leak but thanks to quick response from local fire crews, no one was injured.

Inmates assaulted officers at prison facility
November 20, 2009 17:36 EST

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa Department of Corrections is investigating a pair of assaults on officers at its Oakdale Medical and Classification Center near Coralville.

The department reported Friday that the attacks took place on Nov. 15 and are also being investigated by the Coralville Police Department.

Officials say that in one assault, 22-year-old convicted kidnapper and robber Earl Griffin punched a guard in the shoulder and face, harming the guard's teeth and blacking both of his eyes. The attack occurred shortly after Griffin had received his medication in the facility's pill line.

The department says that a short time later, 18-year-old convicted murderer Damion Seats punched another officer in the face and neck.

Both Griffin and Seats have since been transferred to the Iowa State Penitentiary.
