Comment: The "local paper" will always have a place in the media, because local newspapers cover so many things that TV and radio do not take the time to cover. As someone who is very familiar with the newspaper industry, I was offended by the comments Jack Miller uttered about newspapers on the 6 pm news tonight.... big, mean words coming from the LAST PLACE station in this market. I assume the only reason KGAN is putting so much emphasis on newspapers' weaknesses is to draw attention away from the fact that their TV station is the worst in the market and will continue to be in last place as long as they alienate people whom they should actually be courting as viewers. Why don't you at least TRY to get out of 3rd grade and step up to the big leagues with KWWL and KCRG???? by Michael
Comment: I am 55 and read all my news online, and would prefer that we start saving paper. However, I do NOT like reading books online. I prefer to get comfortable and indulge in reading a book. So...if we get rid of paper newspapers, will books be next? I know my 79-year-old mother prefers reading a paper version of a newspaper. Maybe cutting back on printing them would be a start. by Laura
Comment: No Longer Needed. Everything is on the Web for Free. by Bob
Comment: I read my LOCAL newspaper. I gave up on the Gazette years ago, because of its right-wing agenda.
Comment: I read it every day. All of it. by jacob
Comment: I read two daily papers. My husband reads three and my adult son reads four each day. We all haave access and know how to use computers. It is just not relaxing to sit in a straigt chair and read from a screen. No funnies and no puzzles either. by Alice
Comment: I'd rather read a first-rate paper than watch a third-rate TV station. by Rod
Comment: Of course I read the local paper and need the local paper. Every form of media is and will always be needed...one is not better than the other. There will ALWAYS be a want and a need for the paper. I am very familiar with the newspaper industry and was truly offended by the comments made on the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. And to Laura who says, "I read all my news online, and would prefer that we start saving paper," - well, newsflash newsprint IS recycled, so printing newspaper is NOT wasting paper. KGAN should be trying to form a partnership with a newspaper like the other local tv stations do; not belitteling the area newspapers. KGAN, this is very tacky and uncalled for you to do a "National Inquirer" type of story like this one. You are all about sensationalism. The local and weekly newspapers are thriving, not "dying" like you so believe. Get your facts straight. by Sheryl
Comment: Too many ads/inserts is a waste of paper. Would be nice to get a paper without them. by J
Comment: We read it on-line. by Anne
Comment: I read the local paper and the Des Moines paper. I would read papers from more cities if I had more time. I have a drawer full of recipes, articles and book reviews that I save from the paper. Yes, I could file e-news, or print them off of an internet site, but it wouldn't be the same. And sitting on my deck with a cup of coffee and a laptap to get the news is not that appealing, either. by Laura
Comment: I do not trust the television media enough to make them a single source for information. Each station has political alliances and therfore cannot be used as the only source of information, as well as the comments of people basing news with the use of cell phones. Assuming that everyone has a cell phone is totally discusting. I am wondering when the media is going to pay my bills, my grocery bills since you all are assuming everyone can afford the absurd fees for the subscriptions to cell phones. Please get real, we need local newspapers. by George
Comment: I would greatly miss reading the newspaper with my coffee in the morning..Reading news on the computer is so limiting..who wants to the crossword puzzle on the computer in bed on Sunday Morning or sit on the deck with their laptop trying to read the news? Ugh by jeri
Comment: Absolutely, it's an indispensable resource, with much more thorough info than any TV newscast can provide. by Libby
Comment: Where is the connection that offers free internet access, I noticed in a part of this blog that we could do away with the newspaper due to the free access to all of the news on the free internet. I am puzzled? I have always had to pay to connect to the internet. by Charles
Comment: I read it - and enjoy it first thing in the morning. BUT it is the same stuff that was on the night before - and the same stuff I will hear tonight. So after the first couple of minutes of night news, I turn it off. Would like more national news in the newspaper. by Barb
Comment: newspapers will not die! the decrease in ads is due to the economy- sort of like what you are dealing with. Look at all the edgy stories channel 2 does and still no one watches! by Jason
Comment: I think the role of a real media company in town is vital.
Comment: Of course I read the local paper - online, in print and I follow Gazette employees on Twitter. How else would I know what's going on? by Mimi
Comment: I would read on the web but my wife has to have it in her hands to read. by Tony
Comment: Specifically I read the website, and on weekends I enjoy reading the paper at the local coffee shop. by Jamie
Comment: I'm a college student and I read the print issue, or if I can't get my hands on that, I just read the electronic editions online. by Sarah
Comment: The Gazette doesn't sensationalize, and I appreciate that. by Happy
Comment: What kind of balanced and fair question is this????? can totally see what you're trying to do. by Yo
Comment: I have little use for KGAN's new sensationalism type of television. Built for breaking news is a great hook, but what about built for non-sensationalized news. I just want the news in a nice, professional, not sensationalized package. The local paper gives me INSIGHT to the news, not just the glitz you TV folks seem to need. Take a lesson from them by Mike
Comment: Its more in depth and has a wider array of stories than you see on tv. The journalists have been in the community a long time and aren't fresh out of college
Comment: Some of the best journalism in Cedar Rapids can be found in the Gazette. So put away your pitch forks and torches. by Rod
Comment: I'm still a tactile person--like the feel of the newspaper, among other things. by Sue
Comment: I actually prefer the newpaper over online most of the time (unless I'm in a hurry). by Carla
Comment: Not everyone has a computer or can afford one. by Gary
Comment: Need? That is a good question. I think that I could get the news in other ways. But I still like having a newspaper. by Jesse
Comment: Yes, because TV is worthless. by Vaclav
Comment: I don't read it, however I do
catch the Gazette's news
stories through their RSS
Feeds online.
Paper is overrated. by Nevin
Comment: How marvelously droll that you would ask such a question. The newspaper in your city is community-owned and is beholden to no chain a thousand miles away, unlike KGAN. Thus, naturally, the newspaper offers vastly superior content with a far greater feel for the area it serves than your little dog-and-pony show of a newscast. by Tom
Comment: I read the gazette online, and am very pleased to have access to their examinations of local issues. The paper version would have negative utility, as I would have to go outside to get it, and later would need to get rid of it. The content is indispensable. by Aaron
Comment: I don't NEED it, but I still enjoy it with my morning coffee before going to work. by L.
Comment: Absolutely need to keep the paper alive by Cindy
Comment: I read it daily online and
follow updates via Twitter.
Comment: I scan/read all the articles they push out in the RSS feed. I also pull the activities from their RSS calendar. by Eric
Comment: morning routine...coffee and the gazette....quiet time, and would miss it if they stop printing, they must also remember not everyone has computor, so not everyone can go online to get information. Please consider those people before stopping the print !! by Robin
Comment: I like to sit in a comfortable chair, read the paper and drink a cup of coffee. I cannot think of a better way of starting out my day. by Lu Ann
Comment: Always nice to get up in the morning run to the station and get a coffee and paper, something to actually hold. by Brian
Comment: I read the Gazette from front to back and do the crossword every day!!! by Michael
Comment: i like the sunday paper the most because of the ads from the retailer so i can chose who has the best price. i hate use of the computer to read the news. by denise
Comment: I consume all media, voraciously, including the daily paper that lands on my porch each morning. by Richard
Comment: Read it every morning by Richard
Comment: The real issue is concerning those of us that live in rural Iowa. The Iowa newspapers do not deliver a daily paper in rural areas and since we have only low speed internet access, it takes hours to download the on line PDF versions. If I am going to take the time to download a paper, it will be the Washington Post or New York Times, not the Waterloo Courier or a paper like that. by Bob
Comment: I've read the Cedar Rapids Gazette for 60 years, ever since I learned to read. My day would not be complete with my Gazette fix. As you can tell, I have a computer in my home. I can't read the news on the computer while I'm a passenger in a car. I can't watch the news on the computer when I have no electicity. I rely on it for my information about the world, state, and my community. Got to do the crosswords too. I don't have time to read off the computer. Many people don't have computers, especially the elderly and the poor. You can always read someone else's copy when they are done with it. My Aunt and her husband shared the subscription with her parents in the early days of their marriage on the farm. My two daughters, 45 and 41 read the whole newspaper everyday before they take the kids to school and go to work. The newspaper is an old friend of our family. If you use my comments, refer to me as a reader of the CR GAzette. Thank you by Susan
Comment: I read the Gazette every day, they can save a lot of money by dumping the sport pages as I don't care or watch them on T.V. as it's so boring. They could drop the religion section as I don't need any daily testimonials. I can get by with the rest of the paper. The daily T.V. page with the puzzle could be dropped , but they need the kids pages with more levels to get younger people reading. The comics are a staple. I wish you could, just hace it in the mail box everyday as its after 5pm when I get home and somtimes read them the next day. Either in the mail box or let the Post office delever it and skip Sunday delevery withe a big ad paper on Saturday. I do also read it online. Thats all I have to say about that. by Fibber
Comment: I have not subscribed to the CR Gazette for a number of years. I want news, not a glazed over version that all is well, always. In fact I can not recall any friends or associates that subscribe or read it for years. I do read it online from time to time just as I would tune in a Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi speech to see what damage they have done once a week or so. I was "politely informed" last spring by an Emergency Management Official delivering sand bags that KGAN is nothing but trouble and should not have announced sandbag availability at the start of floods. I also noticed that all flood news conferences were held @ 1100 hrs. every to coincide with KCRG news. Good Job...not business/news as usual. Very refreshing and informative. I am delighted someone uncovered just how corrupt the State DHS is. Good work. Sincerely, the silent majority. Bruce by Bruce
Comment: I read the Gazette every day from cover to cover. I retain news much better from print, plus you can go back and look something up easier. Enjoy editorials, letters to ed, some syndicated columnist, funnies and local news especially. I think I am 1 of 2 or 3 on my block who subscribe. I wouldn't be without my newspaper for all the wild CNN etc. reports or video programs. Not to say I never watch them but only AFTER my Gazette.
by Jo Ann
Comment: Never been a newspaper subscriber, but I have become much more aware of the Gazette since they've entered the 21st century media. Tons of great information at my fingertips. by Brad
Comment: I could not live without my local newspaper! I find it relaxing to read with my morning cup of coffee. I don't have to worry about spilling coffee in my keyboard either! by Deb
Comment: I read it daily. It's a valuable source of information, and despite the fact that I'm 26, I love having a paper in my hands in the morning. Broadcast, online and even radio is fleeting... a printed record lasts forever. by Jeremy
Comment: You cannot sit at the breakfast table and read the computer for news, unless you have a laptop, you cannot lay on the couch on a lazy Sunday morning and read your computer.I read the local paper DAILY from front to back, and look forward to it. by Kurt
Comment: I responded to some false statements in the KGAN story with this blog post: http://stevebuttry.wordpress.com/2009/02/17/setting-the-record-straight/ by Steve
Comment: My husband & I read it daily. by Donna
Comment: I read it religiously every day. There will always be a need for a local newspaper. We count on it for information, opinions, in-depth stories, investigative reporting, ads, business and human interest stories...especially at the local level. There are still so many people who have no access to computers or blackberries to get their information and tv can only provide sound bites. by Diane
Comment: My wife and I read both the Gazette and the Press Citizen. I also read the Sigourney News/Reveiw and the What Cheer papers. Then I read the Regester and Quad City Times on line. by Jerry and Nancy
Comment: I prefer reading the paper because I can read the stories I am interested in. On TV you hear the same story over and over and over even if you are not interested in it. A waste of time.
Comment: With obviosly biased coverage of the major papers I prefer to get my news elsewhere. I watch KGAN and KWWL for local news (your weather forecasts are much better by the way) but have not watched KCRG since their blatantly biased coverage of a Pro-Troop Rally that we attended a few years back. by Gene
Comment: The Gazette is an integral part of our day. by Judy
Comment: Yes, I read my local daily paper (The Gazette) every day from cover to cover. There is no way you can get the information you need just by the internet or TV. A typical 30 minute newscast on TV has about 10 minutes of news with the other 20 minutes devoted to sports, weather and commercials. You can't possibly get the news you need from the internet. I also read my local weekly newspaper (The Monticello Express) from cover to cover each week. There is no other newspaper or TV that cares about the Monticello area like the weekly Express. There is nothing that can compare to sitting down with your local newspaper to catch up on the happenings in your community. Bob by Robert
Comment: We read the newsapaper every day by Vickie
Comment: I don't have internet access at work so I read the Gazette. It gives something to do while I sit around all night at a prison. by Brian
Comment: I read it but just more or less scan it; does not take me long at all. Sometimes I wonder why I spend so much money yearly because there is not much in it. I would rather go online to get my news and of course kgan. by darlene
Comment: Read every day without fail. by Murphy
Comment: Of course we need the local paper. That's the best way to be able to get the news at my own pace, plus all the ads, inserts and coupons are great! by Amanda
Comment: Can't start my day with out it. by DeLores
Comment: The daily newspaper is an important part of the day at our house. It gives complete covereage of stories that we would miss otherwise. It provides some serious information that we need, and some entertainment. It gives us sports results and schedules that we missed elsewhere, and some mental challenge with the puzzles. The list could go on --- but, yes, it is an important part of our daily life. by Enid
Comment: My husband and I both enjoy reading
the paper on a daily basis. We look at
a computer screen daily in our jobs,
prefer not to have to read our
newspaper that way. by Lori
Comment: get the paper daily and read daily. by Harry
Comment: Sometimes you get better news from the Newspaper then you do from the internet by Kory
Comment: what kind of snarky question is that?
Comment: We find we look to our newspaper for "news". A small local newspaper covers more information (weddings, anniversaries, public notices etc.) than can be accomplished by the internet. by Becky
Comment: I need it a heck of a lot more than I need to watch the CBS2/Fox 28/40 news. by Mary
Comment: I will miss the Sat. TV Vision, a big part of why I buy the Gazette, but I understand the reason for the Gazette trying to save pennies. I buy Sundays sometimes. Or even any particular day of the week, but I cannot afford to subscribe. Wish I could. I enjoy many sections and columns in the paper. by Robin
Comment: Newspapers are absolutely essential to me ... and to this democracy. People who say they get all of their news from the electronic media are lazy and barely informed. I want facts, I want true news analysis in length, I want opinion and I want a diversity of opinion and editorial comment. Could I ever get that from cable or local electronic news? by Bill
Comment: Yes and No, usually you
don't need a print paper,
you can get the information
from the internet, plus lots
more. I sometimes get the
paper but its more for when
I do not have internet
access, I need a drop cloth
for painting, or I want to
review the classified. But
even the classifieds are
online now. by tim
Comment: yes, i need the local paper.... i can't do my crossword on the TV or internet!!!! by Shawn
Comment: I utilize on-line news reporting and have no interest in local newspapers for either international, national or local news. I use CBS2 for local news exclusively. The Gazette is a perfect role model for why newsprint is dying. by James
Comment: It's still the best source for news that broadcasters can't include and the internet doesn't provide.
Comment: Too high priced by Arden
Comment: The newspapers provide so much content that is unavailable from other sources - obits, weddings, and other announcements to name a few. I peruse a few local newspapers, and even if they're making cuts, isn't it because of the recession? I don't see how this is "breaking news." by Hubert
Comment: Yes! Yes! Yes! by Linda
Comment: This is irresponsible and self-serving journalism (if you call it that) at its finest. by John
Comment: I buy the Sunday paper to look at the sale ads and to cut coupons by Glenda
Comment: I would absolutely HATE to have to read my news online. There's nothing like sharing the paper with a loved one. If I had to read on line I wouldn't read it at all. I only do this at work to pass time on breaks. My husband feels the same way. WE would miss the newspaper sorely if it were to stop. by Sharon
Comment: Sometimes, (mainly on Saturday s and weekends), I read the C.R. Gazette but there is so little of, or in it anymore, that it's hardly worth the paper it's written on. Ditto for the Des Moines Register, in some ways it's even worse. After being out of Iowa for ~15 years, I find that "The Quad-City Times" is the only newspaper that even looks like shell of it's former self anymore and it's the only one I would even call a news"paper" anymore. I like and enjoy reading it still. by Ron
Comment: Only a few times a week. Usually read the information on line. by Randy
Comment: i would like to know why your picture quality has gotten horrible after yu went digital. its not my tv because your station is the only one like this. i live in dubuque and have to watch channel 18 wisc because your picture is so bad.. by pam
Comment: I enjoy sitting down and having breakfast with the paper in hand.
Comment: I read one print edition and 4-5 newspaper websites daily. I know that they are reporting stories accurately and in an unbiased manner. I can't say the same for KGAN.. by Troy
Comment: I would rather read a newspaper then read if online. by Suzy
Comment: I'll take a LOCAL paper anytime over an out-of-state-owned tabloid TV station with revolving-door news personnel.
PS - The only reason I even know about this article/poll is because it was referenced on the Gazette's web site. by Mason
Comment: Yes I read the paper, but only the internet editions. I do not purchase the printed versions anymore. by Glen
