• FLOODS of '08 VIDEO
People in Louisa County are watching, and worrying, about what the water will do. That includes some in Wapello, where levees that were supposed to protect homes are still in pieces, after the Floods of ‘08.
Family and friends of the Schlesings do everything they can to save their belongings. The water surrounded the home just off of Highway 99 in three hours giving Aracly Schlesing and her family little time to move what they so desperately need: the tools, lumber and sheet rock to rebuild their already flooded out home.
"It was terrible it was devastating believe me. We don't need this we don't need this again not at all," says Aracly.
But as the Schlesing work fast, Aracly tells us all of it, this time around, could have been avoided. The water that now surrounds them could have been held back by a levee if only it had been rebuilt after last years floods.
"The government has spent billions and billions of dollars bailing out people who probably don't need it. They don't have a couple hundred thousand dollars to come in and rebuild the levee and save our homes? I don't think that is fair!"
The levee, not too far away from Aracly’s home broke during the Floods of ’08 but was never fixed. Half of the levee is still gone, washed away, water now surrounds what is left of it. Louisa County Emergency Management Crews say they thought they had more time to make repairs. But neighbors say there is no excuse.
"What are they doing?” Aracly asks. “Letting this happen again and again and again? It's unbelievable it's just out of question." Broken Levees
