The new penny tax many voted on Tuesday will start soon but only in some cities in Linn County. The local options sales tax passed in Cedar Rapids, Alburnett, Lisbon, Springville, Walker, Ely, Fairfax, Palo and Mount Vernon. The tax failed in Walford, Center Point, Robins, Hiawatha and Marion. But even where the tax failed some business owners think they have won.
Irwins has been selling men’s suits and shirts for 53 years, always in down town Marion and now still without an extra one cent sales tax. The owner, Lee Larson, wanted an outcome Tuesday night that would suit him. He says he's pleased and thinks having it pass in Cedar Rapids and not in Marion may bring in business.
The owner of the Flat Tire Café, Mark Alan Stilwell, just down the street from Irwins also thinks he'll see a boom in business. That folks like to have a bite to eat when they're done shopping.
Many flood victims in the process rebuilding are quick to say they'll be buying their supplies to rebuild their homes at the Menards in Marion. While the tax is supposed to help them some question how much is it really going to help if they are also having to pay the tax especially on high price reconstruction projects.L.O.S.T Good for Some Bad for Others?
