• FLOODS of '08 VIDEO
Wednesday the Linn County Board of Supervisors finalized the new budget and the numbers may surprise you. Despite the Floods of ‘08 county property taxes will not go up this year but they may next time around.
Here's how it worked out. This year the taxable value of homes increased but counteracting the rising numbers is a decreasing levy rate. The increase of home value and the decrease of the levy rate canceled each other out. But even if this were to happen again next year supervisors say it will not be enough.
"This year we are able to keep property taxes the same but if we need to make up the shortfall next year taxes would increase," says Lu Barron, Chairperson for the Supervisors.
Supervisors say they are looking at a four million dollar shortfall in FY11 because every day the Linn County Jail sits empty without all of its inmates thousands of dollars are lost. Supervisors say the only way to make up that difference is with LOST, the Local Options Sales Tax, or an increase in property tax next fiscal year.Linn County Property Tax Stays the Same
