We begin where Iowa’s devastating summer started in Parkersburg where an EF-5 tornado ripped through on May 25th, killing eight people, and damaging more than 400 homes, including the home of a role model and coach for teens in Parkersburg.
CBS 2's Chris Jones takes you to the emotional surprise.
One more practice till game day, and coach Jason Key preps his defense. He has no idea some very good news is on the way. But after five tough months, he and his family definitely deserve it.
Jason and Stephanie Key lost everything in the twister's path except their faith in God and their hope in the future.
"Everything was all over the place,” said Jason. “We walked outside and nothing left, it was pretty scary."
"The full force of that wind and debris starting hitting us, and we just held on to each other as tight as we could and said we loved each other," said Stephanie.
The Keys faced the daunting task of rebuilding their lives. Thankfully some close friends wanted to help.
"This is our life, this is friends, it hit home, it's the least we could do for them," said Allison Clark, who nominated Jason for 30 Days of Thanksgiving.
Clark rallied her friends, and the Keys are reaping the rewards; a $5,000 dollar check with their name on it.
Another outpouring of love and support for the Keys in their time of need.
"It's just overwhelming, said Stephanie. “I'm just, it's hard to even believe, just thank you so, so much."
"It just blows your mind, you don't know what to tell people anymore because you've thanked them and everything else," said Jason.
Sometimes saying thanks more than enough.
"It was great to see the looks on their faces, just to see hope," said Clark.
Hope that life will continue to get back to normal, thanks to family and friends.
"I just hope we have the opportunity to reach out to other people when they need help in the future," said Stephanie.
