The new levee the Cedar Rapids city council is talking about is still in the proposal phase. But now we know that even if it passes -- it could be years before we ever see the new flood walls go up.
The proposed levee runs down from Ellis Boulevard all the way down to the landfill.
With this proposal many homes and a few businesses will have to go. But even neighbors who live on the good side of the levee are worried.
Alice Verba is back inside her home after the flood. She says she's only been back for a couple of weeks. But says during that time she's been watching her neighbors also rebuild. Now she fears the hard work will be wasted if a flood happens again and there is no protection in place.
“It’s scary. I just can’t tell you what it was when I came by and saw all our household goods on the curb that we worked all these years for and it was gone."
City planners say before they can start building any sort of flood protection the core of engineers must finish their feasibility study first. That study is not expected to be finished for another 18 to 24 months.
