"The quicker we can turn the animals here, the quicker we can help more," Susan Manson, co-director at the Cedar Valley Humane Society spreads the word from animal shelters around. They are suffering an influx of animals with a lack of space.

"Since the flood, the numbers of unwanted, homeless animals has increased dramatically,” says Manson, “especially because we've only got one fully functioning shelter in this community at the moment.” Manson adds that this increase was present even before the floods.

Manson says the problem stems from pets that are not spade or neutered, “[They] are continually having litter after litter and some of it has to do with unfortunately folks who are unable to have their pets any longer."

The Cedar Valley Humane Society had to put off their 1.2 million dollar expansion due to the floods leaving even more pets without a home.

"Unfortunately we'll have to kind of put that on hold for about 12 months and fix up this building and make do for a little while,” says Manson, “because there are a lot of community needs at this point."

Adopting pets may be helpful, but Manson wants people interested to be sure the process is done thoughtfully, "If you're considering getting a pet, get it from your local shelter as opposed to your pet stores or going to the newspaper, which just kind of encourages the practice of breeding more and more of these litters over and over again."
