OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Ali Farokhmanesh hit another big 3-pointer with 34 seconds left and Northern Iowa pulled off the biggest upset in the NCAA tournament, beating top overall seed Kansas 69-67 in the second round yesterday. Northern Iowa withstood a furious rally to become the first team to beat a No. 1 seed in the second round since UAB and Alabama did it to Kentucky and Stanford in 2004.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Kamille Wahlin shook off a slow start and scored nine straight points in a 2 1/2-minute span late on the way to 15, and eighth-seeded Iowa denied Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer a victory over her old school with a 70-63 win in the first round of the Sacramento Regional last night. It was Iowa's first NCAA tournament victory since 2002.

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State senior guard Alison Lacey will start today's tourney opener between fourth-seeded Iowa State and 13th-seeded Lehigh after missing three games because of pneumonia. Lacey is Iowa State leading scorer. She won't be 100 percent, but the Cyclones are thrilled to have her back for what they hope will be another lengthy tournament run.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Iowa completed its dominating run through the NCAA championships with three of its five finalists winning national titles last night. Matt McDonough won at 125 pounds, Brent Metcalf at 149 and Jay Borschel at 174. Borschel was among five top seeds to end with perfect seasons.
