Israeli ground troops invade Gaza to halt rockets
January 03, 2009 23:24 EST
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- Thousands of Israeli troops are engaged in a major ground offensive in Gaza. The troops are backed by columns of tanks and helicopter gunships.
Israeli officials say they expect a lengthy fight in the densely populated territory.
The offensive began Saturday night after eight days of punishing airstrikes failed to halt militant rocket attacks on Israel.
The incursion has set off fierce clashes with Palestinian militants. Gaza's Hamas rulers are vowing the coastal strip will be a "graveyard" for Israelis forces.
Army ambulances have been seen bringing Israeli wounded to a hospital in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. The military says a total of 30 soldiers were injured in the opening hours of the offensive along with "dozens" of militants.
